Municipal Bonds and Big Data

Municipal Bond Resources:

In the United States:  the Municipal Securities Rulemaking Board (MSRB) website: www.msrb.org has a wealth of information and data on municipal bonds.  In particular, EMMA (Electronic Muncipal Market Access) emma.msrb.org is the official repository for information on virtually all municipal bonds. EMMA provides free public access to official disclosures, trade data, credit ratings and educational materials and other information about the municipal securities market.  The Muni Market in the US has approximately $3.7trillion dollars of outstanding debt. 90,000 different municipalities, and 1.5 million different issues.

Some resources on municipal bonds include:

The Handbook of Muncipal Bonds edited by Feldstein and Fabozzi.

A good book that covers some aspect of municipal bonds, by the sometimes controversial, Meredith Whitney, is The Fate of the States: The New Geography of American Prosperity.

And a Bloomberg publication: Bloomberg Visual Guide to Municipal Bonds, by Robert Doty.

Some new and important sources of data that affect municipal bond issuance and valuation will likely be found in: www.data.gov.
